Over exposure to UV light from the sun and or sunbeds is the main cause of skin cancer, the UK's most common cancer - scroll down to see how you can protect your skin from harmful UV light.
If you work outdoors every day, you could have an increased risk of developing skin cancer – especially if you have fair or freckled skin that has a tendency to burn.
Most skin cancers are caused by over exposure to ultra-violet radiation (UVR), which can't be seen, felt, and is not related to temperature.
Skin cancers seldom hurt and are often seen before they're felt, so it's important to regularly check your skin.
All skin types can be damaged by exposure to UVR, which can lead to malignant melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, and one of the most common cancers among young adults in the UK.
Sun exposure in childhood is especially risky: did you know that one blistering sunburn in childhood more than doubles your chances of developing a melanoma in later life?
Educating children about the sun will help reduce skin cancer numbers in the UK. Encourage primary schools to register for free at www.sunsafeschools.co.uk
No matter what your age or race, if your hobbies take you outdoors a lot, you could be putting yourself at risk if you fail to protect your skin from UV radiation. It's a good idea to check the UV index.
You can never avoid the sun completely but try to avoid spending time outdoors between 11am and 3pm, when the sun is at its peak.
There's no avoiding the fact that skin cancer is on the rise. So, before you strip off this summer, pick up a tube of SPF 30+ broad spectrum UVA sunscreen and stick to the shade.
Remember, most skin cancer cases in the UK are preventable with sun safe measures! Find out more
